Bota Box Review: “Bota Box Malbec is a plush, medium-bodied wine with aromas of blueberry and blackberry. I purchased this box of Bota Box Malbec at Corkscrew Wine & Spirits at 2319 W Lindsey St, Norman, OK 73069 for $20.99. After watching a few Wine IQ videos and learning about the benefits of drinking boxed wine, I was excited to try to find a nice boxed red! I generally drink Franzia because that’s what my mother used to keep at home, and it’s what’s easy for college kids to afford. I never liked it, though – and wondered why I was more interested in drinking white wine than red wine. *Sigh*

The manager at Corkscrew was very willing to help find the right boxed wine for me, and asked me what kind of red I wanted. At this point, I hadn’t yet watched the Wine IQ videos about the flavor and scent profiles of different white and red wines so I did not know which types of reds I would like. He suggested Bota Box brand and we narrowed it down to a Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. I had never tried Malbec before, so I bought it. The price was just right, because I will get more than 20 glasses out of this bag! I’ll never underestimate the power of a good boxed wine ever again.

When writing this blog, I was initially looking at all the available information and I got caught up by the term “appellation.” This Malbec claims to be a “California Malbec,” but is made from 85%+ grapes from Mendoza, Argentina. This was very interesting to me, as I figured the grapes would be mainly from California, considering it was manufactured in Manteca, California. Perhaps the “California Malbec” is prepared by fermenting grapes in a different style than Malbecs around the world, regardless of where the grapes were sourced. According to Professor Boyer’s Wine IQ videos, Argentina is known for their Malbecs. I’m thrilled that I coincidentally chose a Malbec with Argentinian grapes, because from now on I will likely purchase similar Malbecs from Argentina. Perhaps it will taste much different than the “California Malbec” supplied by Bota Box, but that’s something for future Audrey to figure out.

NOW FOR THE TASTING —

At the time that I am writing this review, I have already drank nearly half of the box of Malbec over the few weeks I have owned it, and have noticed that my perceived flavor profile shifts slightly each time I drink it. Depending on how much of it I drink or what I eat with it, it tastes slightly differently. I am going to focus on the current time — Tuesday, September 18 at 1:36 pm. (Do not judge).

I’m currently enjoying this glass of Bota Box Malbec from the comfort of my own bed, as I catch up with responding to emails and finishing up lab reports. Writing this blog is a perfect break. Right now I am noticing how beautiful the deep eggplant-burgundy color of the wine is, almost like a garnet. The scent is truly strikingly alcoholic, which I do not particularly prefer. I would rather smell something floral or fruity than predominantly smelling “alcohol.” The taste is redeeming, though! I taste a spicy, earthy finish on the back of my throat that is nicely balanced by the initial blackberry and other dark sweet fruits. I taste cherry and “jammy” flavors that are mellowed by the high alcohol content and scent, before finishing with a woody, earthy note. It is a very rich wine that I have enjoyed each time I have drank it. This time it was not paired with food, but I will compare notes to my future exposures to Bota Box Malbec + Indian food.

 

I’m finding myself excited about red wine again, SO LET’S DRINK TO THAT!
